.Happy New Year, 2016 out!

20161231 New Year celebration (1)

It was eye opening going through photos from 2016 for this collage. I honestly had a change of heart, and it almost made me forgive the year for all the hard things it brought. Ok… so I have totally forgiven the year and we have completely made up. This was a big year for us! Sure there was a lot of excruciatingly hard stuff to deal with, but we really have had about a zillion blessings and miracles and tender mercies happen for us too… and that that's the stuff I choose to remember. We are so blessed. Didn't think I'd be saying this at the close of this year, but thanks 2016! I really mean it.

We got to have Tessa here with us on New Years Eve since her flight back to Hawaii was early the next morning and we live closest to the airport. Score! We had such a fun time…

.I'm Canadian... officially

I immigrated to Canada as a newlywed in 2008. We drove our little white Toyota Camry packed to the ceiling with my things across the border one day. At the time, I had never expected to be living away from my family again after I had already lived in Illinois for three long years working as a nanny for my sister. I was telling myself (and everyone else) that it would just be for a little while. Only a year or two in Canada. I could handle that thought. It was a little scary and I didn't know what to expect the rest of our life to be like.

I was scared to pay for things with Canadian money... it looked different. I didn't know what all these weird stores and restaurants were... Canadian Tire? Superstore? Earls? Tim Hortons?

It didn't take too long before I started to realized that Canada is not very different from the States AT ALL... Plus I made friends and I got to know my in-laws better.

After 8 years here and 1 full year since I became a citizen I am happy to report that I am fully comfortable, immigrated, at-home, and thriving in the Great White North.

Thank goodness, because otherwise this would be really awkward.

These years of my life I've been more blessed than I've ever been before. I've always had such amazing luck with such a great family and friends; but the moment I married Air, my luck doubled and overflowed. And life has never been better. I have more incredible family members now than I even know what to do with.

Seriously though--What do I do with all of them?? What!?

How can I be so lucky? It's bewildering. I know I couldn't have done anything to deserve these people in my life.

Air's family is just as dear to me as my own. Ever since I've been here they've been incredibly kind and loving to me. They are the kindest people in the world for taking me in like they have. I immediately felt like I was one of them, and instantly fell in love. I can't even tell you how much they mean to me...

I'll always be an American... but I am so glad I also get to be a Canadian!

.eighteenth month

20160428 alice 18 months (34) edit2

I’ve gotta be                                                                       honest, I’m

posting this much much later                                 than the time Alice actually

turned 18 months, but lets see how much I            can remember about Alice at this adorable

time of her life... ♥Alice loves to read books and       sing songs. Especially songs with actions. ♥She’s

obsessed with the combo of her binkie, her baby doll, and her blankie and has no trouble whatsoever

taking naps or going to bed as long as they are all present and accounted for. ♥She runs so funny without

bending her knees (still not so sure when she'll grow out of that?). ♥She is in love with shoes and socks…

she begs to have them so she can put them on and take them off repeatedly throughout the day. ♥She thinks

it’s the funniest thing in the world when she puts a bucket on her head and acts silly. We all agree it is. ♥She

spends much of her time quietly rummaging through buckets of toys and entertaining herself, always

busy. ♥She is always blabbing on about who knows what. We can’t wait til she can talk with real words!

♥She is pretty stranger-shy, but definitely prefers women? ♥She loves her big brother and wants to

be doing whatever he is doing all the time. ♥Her skin is soft and plump and pink to perfection.

I squeeze and kiss her all day long. ♥She loves to repeat the last sound of your

sentence back to you. ♥She can actually sing really well and

harmonizes with me. ♥She is adorable and

perfect and she lightens

our life!

Can you tell I had way too many photos to choose from after this photo shoot?

Here she is with her favorite binki/baby/blankie combo:

This last photo just makes me giggle… these two are always rummaging through toys and making a huge mess in this tiny space we call the “toy area”. Adorable and hilarious:

.what can I say 2014

I remember thinking and looking forward at the beginning of this year. 2014 was absolutely abounding in promise and hope. Early in the year we had a positive pregnancy test! Then we finally got some positive test results about Aaron's health problems, and he started medications to help him. We were seriously loving life and feeling very blessed—despite our illnesses (both of us were sick during my first trimester haha).

Things don't always go as planned, do they.

Somehow some bad things and hard times snuck into our planned year… but we’ve really felt the hand of the Lord holding us up and reminding us of just that: everything is in His hands. We came out of the year in a good place (maybe even a better place?). We are so grateful that Air can stay at home for now and focus on his health, without too much stress or distraction, thanks to disability insurance.

And then, all within the final month of the year, we have been given so many blessings and gifts from our loved ones it’s insane. Never have I felt so loved, grateful, and undeserving(haha) all at once.

What I’m trying to say is: 2014 totally redeemed itself within a matter of weeks!
We couldn’t be happier about it.

.Aaron and Amber Forever

Today is our 6th Anniversary and I'd like to finally share the story of Aaron's proposal with this blog of ours.
It's actually a funny story. Mostly just embarrassing for me, but I'll get over it.

------------

At the beginning of the year 2008, Aaron was living in Canada and I had moved back to Utah after three years in Illinois. We were still somehow dating very seriously after we both felt strongly that we wanted to be together. His job at the time involved every other week of him going up North to the oil field and then being off work the other half of the time. He was driving down to Utah almost every other week to spend time with little old ME. It was crazy.

We both knew we'd get married. I had given him the 'go ahead' on proposing whenever and however he desired, and then I was just waiting to see how he'd do it. I also had shown him wedding ring styles that I liked. One specific style was my favorite and he wanted to give me that. I didn't know this at the time, but he had found a friend of one of his mission friends in Utah who was a jewelry maker, and he was commissioning him to make my ring. Getting the ring made was taking longer that he wanted it to... he wanted to have it right away so he could propose on this trip to Utah. The jewelry maker agreed to let him borrow the diamond (set in a temporary band) since the actual band wasn't ready yet. Only problem was he had to return it and go back to Canada the next day!

So, in the evening of March 7th, while he was on one of his short visits to Utah, he wanted to go down to visit our friends who lived in Provo. We love hanging out with the Larsen's and Hooley's, he met Jesse and Colby on his mission and they are still really close friends. We played rock band (as was the thing at the time) with all of them and had a super fun night. Air was pretty sneaky and managed to get the diamond from Jesse at some point that night.

And luckily for all of us, we were really camera happy:

We left pretty late that night to drive back up to my parent's house in West Jordan. We had taken my car, therefore I was driving. While we were on the freeway Aaron started saying he wanted to stop and go for a walk at the Daybreak lake (where we went on our very first date). I said, "Nah, it's too late and really cold outside". Then he tried to get me to go to the theater where we went on our first date by suggesting we could go to a movie at Daybreak. Again I said it was too late and I was tired. We could just watch one at my parent’s house. He finally dropped the subject after a while, and since I was driving it just wasn't happening.. (I am so embarrassed).

We got to my parent's house and I went to my room and he went to the guest bedroom (where he had been staying that week). A minute later someone was knocking on my bedroom door. I opened the door and there was Aaron, down on one knee in the hallway of my parent's basement. Holding a beautiful wooden ring case with a big diamond in it. He said, "Hey, do you want to get married?"

I felt pretty silly for not catching on or being willing to just go to the flippin’ lake for a walk! Anyway, it made for a funny story… right?

And we were still pretty camera happy as you will see:

.It all led to this: a post by Air

clip_image002

The year, 1984. The month and day, January 31. The place, Saskatoon Saskatchewan. What my mom ate for dinner the night before, unknown. But whatever it was it transformed into me (that’s how that works right?).

And the extraordinary … average life of Aaron Gusa began.

My wonderful wife asked me to throw some words together that coherently (or attempt to be coherent) send my 20’s into oblivion while l say hello to my 30th year here on earth. So here's what I’m going to write a bit about:

It’s interesting to me my perspective on things now. I reflect on my life fairly often and I remember vividly a lot of events that have impacted me and who I am today. During my 20’s there have been many experiences that have changed me. I started my 20’s in 2004 and a completely different hemisphere. I served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in northern and central Argentina. I became ill there which until then I seldom was sick but after I was seldom not. I became plural at 24 in Bountiful, Utah with my beautiful American lady. We bought a house with a white picket fence…. …..well, a broken fence that’s white on one side! Our awesome baby boy was born. We’ve been really happy!

CAMERA MARCH 29 033

At 20, I learned to speak Castellano and that taught me the importance of communicating to be understood and understand. Language is amazing. People are amazing. While I was there I was around small children that could speak and communicate better than me. I was often treated like one of them because of it. I learned quickly to say, “Le prometo que soy mas inteligente en ingles que en espanol!” which means, “I promise I’m smarter in English than in Spanish”. People feel so deeply and have such vivid ideas that we want to share, but we have such ineffective tools to describe them to each other. Right now we communicate through symbols, gestures, faces, noises and tones that are interpreted by someone who uses similar methods as we do. I was placed where my method was not used except by my English missionary companions. I learned quickly that all the information I had gathered to that point no one knew about because I couldn’t share it so I was presumed a nuisance and an idiot at times. The methods we use to communicate a lifetime of information that we’ve gathered, developed meaning, and give us perspective mean little if the person listening believes the few words that are said encompass everything we mean. I’ve tried to be an unassuming listener because I know now that behind everyone’s walls of communication there is an intelligent person that I can’t see, a person who is capable of valuable contribution, thought, caring and every emotion and desire that I experience myself. It’s changed me and how I see people.

While in Argentina I had health issues that had a massive impact on me. Over months I was bed ridden, I lost contact with my family, my then girlfriend back in Canada, and everyone in the world that was familiar to me. My companion at the time refused to talk to me (which wasn’t too bad because he didn’t speak English) and started rumors that I was faking being sick so I could return to Canada. I was isolated. During this time I learned how little in control I am to the events around me and to submit to something greater than me. It seems simple but it’s become a core characteristic of mine. Little did I know it would help me cope with the next 10 years of health struggles. Amber has written a lot about that so I won’t go on about it! This has changed me and how I view the struggles in life.

My favorite thing that happened to me in my 20’s is my family. By far it outweighs any other experience I’ve had. In August 2008 my wife married me and I felt like a complete person. Until then I always felt alone when I was by myself. She’s been so great for me and never could I have imagined choosing to spend the rest of my years with anyone else. She’s been my friend, wife, nurse, mother of my child, and most importantly: cub scouter. We’re still completely in love coming up on 6 years, we work together, we talk together and there is no secret between us. Complete trust to another person in all aspects of my life. Amber is my anchor in peace. It’s changed me, I depend on another.

clip_image006clip_image008
Amber and I worked together to bring life. A life that would become ours. A life to guide, nurture, and participate in! When he was born I felt complete, an emptiness I didn’t know I had was filled again. It’s a gift that has brought my wife and I closer together and we’re really consumed by our son. Everything he does with awe and wonder brings a light and a color to the simple things again. My wife and I get excited about things like recognizing a bird in the sky, hearing a dog bark, it’s awesome. This has changed how I appreciate the little things and experiences in my life.

clip_image010
My 20’s were AWESOME. I’ve learned and grown up. I’ve made mistakes and tried to correct them. I’ve been given more than I deserve and I’m so grateful. Even though I listed some things in this post there is so much more that I would love to share, and wish I could but at the risk of sounding like an old man….

Now that I’m turning 30 I’m looking forward to another Chapter in my life with my family (if the chapters of life are a decade and not a single year).

It will probably change me…
